Unspoken rules?

Are there rules that aren’t so stringently defined, in mathematics? Rules that are not requirements but are goals – exist on more of a spectrum than wrong/right, though they can be used to dismiss a piece of mathematics if it severely violates them, not as incorrect, but as ‘bad’?

  1. Be interesting
  2. Be concise
  3. Be original

This sounds like Hardy’s conditions for beauty in mathematics.
